Bidvest International Logistics opens new pharmaceutical warehouse at OR Tambo airport
Transport and logistics company Bidvest International Logistics (BIL) has opened a new pharmaceutical warehouse in OR Tambo International Airport, in Ekurhuleni, east of Johannesburg, to meet the country’s growing demand for efficient, compliant and resilient healthcare distribution.
The facility is accredited by national regulator the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority and can handle, store and distribute Schedule 0 to 6 medicines.
“The pharmacy features temperature-controlled zones to accommodate a range of products. Both our electronic inventory management and temperature monitoring systems are validated to ensure reliability and robustness,” says BIL responsible pharmacist Clement Kgatla.
Further, the location of the warehouse provides easy access to major air and road routes, which enables fast turnaround times and operational flexibility.
“As a Customs Degroup Facility, BIL can receive clients’ cargo directly into the warehouse while awaiting customs clearance, which reduces delays, lowers the risk of temperature fluctuations and streamlines logistics,” says BIL GM Ezelda Botha.
The warehouse can store multiple goods under one roof and consolidate deliveries from a single location, which removes the need for multiple service providers, she adds.
In terms of security, the facility also has a supply chain security standards organisation Transported Asset Protection Association A-rating, which is the highest rating of the set of standards.
Further, the development is part of BIL’s ongoing investment in world-class infrastructure to support South Africa’s healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors, she notes.
